As experienced attorneys in the state of Alabama, Mark and Whitney Polson believe in the power of persistence towards overcoming adversity and obstacles in one’s life. To celebrate those who have demonstrated an ability to fight through difficult situations in their own lives, Polson and Polson has established the Polson & Polson, P.C. conquering adversity scholarship offering a reward of $500 to one student who they believe has been demonstrated the ability to overcome insurmountable odds.

2018 Winner: Jason Schiffner

I was born and raised in Washington State. After high school, I began work in the computer networking industry. The 9/11 attacks inspired me to join the military. I decided to try out for Air Force Special Operations as a Combat Controller. After two and a half years of some of the military’s hardest training, I finally graduated. In my ten year career, I deployed many times to Afghanistan, Iraq and other countries. I earned a Bronze Star for combat actions in Afghanistan, among other rewards. In the course of my career, I experienced many injuries, including a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). I decided that I needed to slow down and separate from the military so that I could spend more time with my wife, son, and the community. After a period of transition, I decided to go back to college in the field of Music Education. Music has been an important aspect of my life and I wanted to share it with students. I’ve discovered that my TBI and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) made my education difficult. However, in the military, I learned how to endure, persevere, and overcome. Presently I am a Music Education major playing the Alto Saxophone at San Jose State University and I will graduate in 2022.

In His Own Words: “I didn’t know if my story was worthy of consideration, but I chose to share it. I’m honored and surprised that attorneys Polson and Polson have selected me as the recipient of the Conquering Adversity Scholarship. I am also very grateful for their generosity. This award is meaningful to me and my family both financially and emotionally. Sometimes it has been difficult to acknowledge my injuries. I’ve discovered that it takes courage to heal. When attorneys Polson and Polson selected me as the winner I felt encouraged, supported, and motivated. Thank you!”
